The essentials of optimum health, longevity and natural medicines

INTRODUCTION

 

All disease is self-limiting, except for genetic disorders. This statement from Rose's Immunology had a profound effect on changing my views about the role of traditional medicine in the treatment of disease. When I realized that God had built into the body all of the mechanisms needed to protect and heal itself from every disease, my treatment objective shifted from altering body function, by treating symptoms, to focusing on, understanding and stimulating these natural "built-in" processes.

 

There are so many people searching for answers. "Why am I always tired? Why am I sick all the time? Why are my friends dying when they are not old? Why do most of my friends have arthritis, allergies, heart disease and cancer? What's wrong with our health care system? Why doesn't my Doctor tell me anything about nutrition and health when he knows so much about medication, sickness and disease? Is there a way for me to be healthy and really enjoy living?

 

Most people believe in "healing" to some degree, whether it is by faith, positive mind control, herbs or their doctor's arsenal of medication. Few know of and even fewer understand the inherent powerful protection against disease possessed by our healthy immune system. I was astounded that contagious diseases "caused by bacteria", even gonorrhea, are destroyed, naturally, by the action of antigen-antibody complex and complement, a system of 9 different enzyme precursors, found in our plasma and other body fluids, that destroy bacteria, viruses and other invaders[1]. So why doesn't this powerful protective mechanism work all the time? Are there dietary issues, that account for only 50% of those contracting HIV to actually develop AID's, even after 10 years[2]? Why does our immune system protect only some of us from cancer and other serious diseases allowing others to get sick, stay ill or even die?

 

Can we really know the answers to these questions? Most medical "experts" already know how the body functions, they only practice as if they are ignorant, why? The USDA and the FDA also knows the truth, so why are we purposely kept uninformed? Scientific research proves, without a doubt, that what we eat and don't eat is directly related to all of the diseases that plague this nation and all the other industrialized countries. Before you finish reading this book you will know for certain that all the diseases that bring fear into your heart are caused by neglect and abuse of our "temple". Yes, you really can prevent cancer, cardiovascular disease, leukemia, and premature death. It only requires the acquisition of knowledge about what to do and what not to do and then applying these principles to your life. 

 

The wonderful thing about this health plan is that you do not have to believe in God in order for it to work for you. It is universal, in that it works for humans...believers and non-believers! It is not a faith-based plan, all of the mechanisms to prevent disease are built into us, and the research will clearly show that supplying certain dietary essentials, while avoiding others, will produce  "abundant" health, as promised by God.

 

I see patients that want the "cure" yesterday and, generally speaking, they are the same ones that complain that "McDonalds is too slow"; "I don't have time to cook, my microwave oven isn't fast enough," or "I don't have time to listen to the why's, I just want you to fix me"; and "no, I don't want to do anything different, just do something to make me feel better". 

 

On the other hand, there are patients that really don't know why they got sick, yet are willing to listen and eager to do anything that will improve the quality of their life. There are also Physicians who are seeking information that will intelligently address questions of diet and nutrition, provide healthy treatment protocols that will improve the quality of patient health-care and help establish a fruitful long-term, cost effective, commitment to their patients health needs. To the latter two groups I dedicate this work.

 

This book contains information vital to achieving optimum physical well-being and vibrant mental health. These, well documented, natural healing principles and alternative medicines have, for thousands of years, produced optimum health, without side effects. This is not going to be another one of those, "trust me, I'm a Doctor" books, but rather a comprehensive evaluation of all of the factors necessary to achieve optimum health, scientifically cited as a reference resource for the physician, yet explained in such a way that the average person can understand the science part of health, disease, nutrition and exercise.

 

This optimum health plan was revealed by God in His written word, the Bible, and its efficacy confirmed by modern Medical science, nutritional research and proven repeatedly in the applied clinical nutrition arena. This book is not intended to be a treatise on religion, but rather is directed toward exposing the health seeker to the Biblical health principles that have worked in the past, are in continued usage today, along with the "scientific" explanation as to how and why they work and how their application can dramatically influence sickness, disease, health and longevity. These health principles, although repeatedly, and almost exhaustively validated, are almost completely ignored by established health-care protocols and politics. Why?

 

"The addiction to drug companies", an editorial published in Biological Psychiatry," illuminates the unhealthy relationship between physicians and drug manufacturers. "The overall influence of the [healthcare] industry is to emphasize drug treatment at the expense of other modalities: psychotherapy, social approaches, nutritional, herbal, and natural remedies...It focuses attention on disorders that are treatable by drugs, and may promote over-diagnosis. It reinforces the practice of dealing with disease by treatment of symptoms, and diverts interest from prevention."[3]

 

The first rule for Physicians is "first do no harm". That objective is very difficult, in some cases impossible, with today's powerful pharmaceuticals. The treatment of one symptom with medication produces another symptom requiring another medication inducing yet another powerful physiologic disturbance. There are increasing concerns over the "abuse" and miss-use of prescription medication and a concomitant shift toward "natural" or "alternative" medicines.

 

The Archives of Internal Medicine, Oct. 9,1995 reports that preventable prescription drug-related diseases and deaths cost us $77 billion a year. When used as they are intended and by competent Physicians they can and do help, but the way they are over used today is "inflicting damage" at the rate of 9 million dollars a minute!!! Approximately eight million people per year are hospitalized (28% of all admissions) for diseases induced by drugs that were supposed to improve their health. Even more alarming is the fact that adverse drug effects are responsible for 100,000 deaths a year - more than twice the number killed in car accidents.

 

Please, don't misunderstand me, if the body is in crisis, using medication might be appropriate to affect symptoms and return normalcy as soon as possible, but at the same time, every effort should be made, and resource used, to stimulate the body to "repair" or correct these aberrant processes as quickly and naturally as possible.

 

Is there a "hidden agenda" that directs substantial effort and the enormous resources employed by the American Medical Association, the pharmaceutical industry and their "strong arm component," the FDA, to prevent you from knowing the truth about Gods "natural health remedies", thereby keeping you addicted to the self serving monetary interests of our current "sickcare" system"?

 

The focus of the profit driven one trillion dollar a year, so called, "healthcare" system is certainly not on good health. It is purposely designed to force you to return to the doctor, to get another prescription for more drugs, increasing your dependence on both. This is guaranteed long-term income that provides wealth and security to doctors and drug companies, at your expense...health and monies! 

 

If it weren't for the remarkable advancements made in surgical techniques and diagnostic equipment, the practice of medicine would still be in the "dark ages". Giving you a prescription, that produces birth defects, causes death and debilitating illnesses is no better than what was practiced by the Egyptian medical experts, using "dung" as one of the beneficial ingredients! If this statement upsets you, the "godlike" image presented by General Hospital, Dr. Kildare and Dr. Ben Casey, has been etched into your brain. The truth is, there are very, very few man-made drugs that have benefited mankind more than the inventors!

 

It was the intent of Congress when it created the FDA to ensure that foods were safe, pure, wholesome, made or processed sanitarily, honestly labeled, to continue research and public education, set regulations regarding definitions, standards, and identification of foods, to promote honesty and fair dealings in the interest of the consumer and "determine the safety and effectiveness of drugs and medical devices."[4]

 

I believe that the FDA has failed its assigned mission and grossly misinterpreted its purpose and usurped power that appears to be uncontrolled and maliciously misdirected toward alternative medicines, dietary supplements and anything else that opposes consensus medical thought. Apparently, adopting a position that protects the financial interests of the drug-oriented entities, and their policies, thus providing them with a steady supply of "victims," with preventable diseases, induced by adverse drug reactions or caused by dietary ignorance.

 

The literature is replete with study after study demonstrating that gross nutritional deficiencies are plaguing this nation. Research clearly proves that the consumption of a high fat, high empty calorie diet causes or contributes to a broad spectrum of health related diseases. These diseases are certainly preventable and should be treated as diet/nutritional deficiencies, not symptomatically, with prescription medication.

 

The health conscious sector, including Physicians, are looking everywhere for viable alternatives to traditional medicine. Interest in acupuncture, Hinduism, yoga, New Age health notions, crystals, aromatherapy and Feng Shui for health and healing has dramatically increased. Unfortunately, they are looking in the wrong places... healing comes from within! If your car engine oil light is on, and you are 3 quarts low, burning incense, waving a crystal over it, or determining the chi energy flow for its location, is not going to solve the problem…it needs 3 quarts of oil! The real value of nutritional supplements is that they can quickly replace the oil, but lifestyle and changes in dietary habits will keep the warning light off and the engine full of oil. Both approaches have merit, but the later is by far the the best.

 

This is not an anti-medical book, but rather a scientifically sound and referenced opposition to current medical practices and their nutritional perspective. I do not speak very highly of those powerful organizations that purposely keep the American public uninformed, overmedicated, and chronically ill, for financial gain and political profit, rather than promote health for our best interests.

 

It is obvious that the drug-oriented allopathic doctors and their American Medical Association have not appropriately addressed nor met the health needs of the American people. They have instead, turned us into a Nation of co-dependant legal drug-addicts! If pharmaceuticals were the answer, then Americans would be the healthiest people on earth. If the Medical profession practiced the appropriate "cures" for these disease states, there wouldn't be an alternative search by the public.   

 

The desire for less medication and "more things natural" is a commendable goal, but racing, as consumers and doctors are, toward that end, without knowledge and understanding is much less fruitful. The following chapters fill that gap, comparing what we have recently discovered with what was already known and practiced for thousands of years as practical instructions for divine health from God.

 

Optimum health is more than taking vitamins and herbs instead of prescription medication. God gave us valid health principles that work when they are "obeyed" or followed. We now know that these principles are physiologically sound, medically perfect, and scientifically ascertained. The mechanisms for good health are built into us and the information needed to make them work is contained in His written Word, the Bible. All we have to do is practice them.

 

The first step is to learn what these principles are, then understand them, so they can be intelligently applied to varying degrees of life-style change and restoration of health. The more you learn, the more you can do. The healthier you become, the greater the desire to incorporate His life changing principles, including prayer, meditation, exercise and rest. We have proof that certain activities positively or negatively influence the part of the brain that that makes us "human" and can strengthen or weaken our mind, will and emotion, dramatically influencing physical, mental and spiritual health[5].

 

The fingerprint of God will be revealed in what we call biological life, as seen and reviewed scientifically, and offered for your perusal, amazement, application and benefit. It is my belief, that the information, presented in this book, will answer the questions: Can we really live to be over 100 and be healthy? Does the body cure cancer? Can arthritis and allergies be prevented and cured naturally? Is exercise really necessary? What can be done to slow down or reverse the aging process? Which is best, high-protein or high-carbohydrate intake? Why is a low-fat diet not healthy? Who should I really believe about diet and nutrition when there are so many experts? Does prayer really work...can it be scientifically proven?

 

The traditional "food pyramid" is replaced by what I call "the Optimum Health Pyramid" because most of the important dietary health contributions should come from the Plant Kingdom. In fact, all essential for life, "good things", as you will discover, come from the Plant Kingdom. Cholesterol and most of the "bad things" are consumed from the Animal Kingdom. I can't think of anything that is essential for life that is only found as an animal source. The vitamin B12 issue will certainly be addressed physiologically and in light of recent discoveries of non-animal B12 sources. 

 

Is it animal, vegetable or mineral? Remember that game? We absolutely cannot live without vegetables (plants) and minerals, but animals? Well, you decide! I believe that meats, and dairy products, with the exception of certain fish, should be viewed more as desserts, delicacies, and death wishes, not as dietary essentials and certainly not as a large chuck of the food pyramid.

 

Vegetarianism has for years been a "turn off" word, but this is what God had in mind for us, when we were created. With the help of valid scientific evidence, I will prove that this is the best way of eating, so you can, at least, be able to decide on which side of the fence you want to jump or just stay on it. Consuming certain flesh foods by biblical standards (eating Kosher) is certainly a better way of eating as an omnivore, than the Standard American Diet (SAD as it is so accurately called) prevalent with most industrialized Nations.

 

I'm going to show you His way, the healthiest way, the scientifically proven way…you can then lean His way, the American way or simply create your own way. Vegetarians really are the healthiest people on earth! Clinical research and epidemiologic studies confirm that the closer the diet is to that of a vegetarian, the healthier, happier, more intelligent (more about this later), and more resistant to disease humans are[6].

 

The relevance of each of the important dietary sectors of the Plant Kingdom, given to us as food, will be discussed based upon their nutritive content and ratio of essential for life biochemical constituents. "And God said, See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the land, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them as food." (Gen. 1:29)(Amplified Bible)

 

Vegetables will be presented as the "garden variety", those we call greens and salad stuff, and as our resource for the "amazing" phytochemical nutrients, minerals, and vitamins; Grains or "grass seeds" are discussed primarily as an abundant source of vital complex carbohydrates, called digestible starches for energy and indigestible dietary fiber essential for good health; Legumes and beans as our primary source of proteins. Nuts and other seeds for their high content of essential fats, called essential for a reason; Fruits for their vitamin content, enzyme contribution and phytonutrient composition; Herbs for their use as medicinal plants. The influence of animal products on health and disease is discussed, in detail, with substantial references. 

 

Additionally, the presentation and explanation of the essentials of biochemistry and metabolism is offered, as simply as possible, as information vital to understanding the relevance of it all. Fiber, fasting, juicing, toxins, exercise, rest, the power of prayer, and anti-aging protocols are discussed in depth.

 

The last two chapters are dedicated to providing information that will enable you to know, without a doubt, that there is a God that "created everything that was made and without Him was not anything made." John 1:3 You can also know who He is and how much He loves us. These were the "really fun" chapters for me!

 

God never intended for us not to know Him and when you realize the truth, you will know, with absolute certainty His existence, power, majesty and presence.
